Comedy:-  comedy is a literary genre and a type of dramatic work that is amusing and satirical in its tone, mostly having a cheerful ending.

The motif of this dramatic work is triumph over unpleasant circumstance by creating comic effects, resulting in a happy or successful conclusion. Thus, the purpose of comedy is to amuse the audience.

Comedy has multiple sub-genres depending upon the source of the humor, context in which an author delivers dialogues, and delivery methods, which include farce, satire, and burlesque. Tragedy is opposite to comedy,  as tragedy deals with sorrowful and tragic events in the story. According to Oxford advanced learner’s dictionary, comedy means a branch of drama, which deals with everyday life and humorous events. It also means a play of light and amusing type of theater. Comedy may be defined as a play with a happy ending. Though, there are many functions of comedy, yet the most important and visible function of comedy is to provide entertainment to the readers. The reader is forced to laugh at the follies of various characters in the comedy. Thus, he feels jubilant and forgets the humdrum life. George Meredith, in his idea of comedy, is of the view that comedy appeals to the intelligence unadulterated and unassuming, and targets our heads. In the other words, comedy is an artificial play and its main function is to focus attention o what ails and the world. Comedy is critical, but in its scourge of folly and vice. There is no contempt or range in a comedy. He is also of the view that the laughter of a comedy is personal, polite and very near to a smile. Comedy exposes the ridicules stupidity and morality, but without the wrath of the former.
